Southampton and Bournemouth played out an entertaining 1-1 draw at the Vitality Stadium on Sunday in an end-to-end encounter.

First-half chances were few and far between, but the Cherries could have had a penalty in the 32nd minute when Sofiane Boufal flew in on Adam Smith – but the referee adjudged Smith to have dived, and booked the defender for simulation.

Bournemouth then took a deserved lead on the stroke of half-time when Scottish winger Ryan Fraser placed a shot past Fraser Forster. Southampton could have struck back instantly when a brilliant Ryan Bertrand cutback found Sofiane Boufal, who fluffed his lines from 10 yards – blazing high and wide.

Southampton looked much more purposeful in the second half, and the introduction of Nathan Redmond brought about the equaliser when his cutback found Charlie Austin, who made no mistake with his finish.

Austin could have won the game for The Saints on 81 minutes when yet another excellent Ryan Bertrand cross found the talisman – who just couldn’t keep his header low enough, as it skimmed the top of Asmir Begovic’s bar.
