Goalkeeper and Defenders

9. For much of the first-half it looked as though McCarthy might have an unusually quiet game, but he was called into action more and more as the afternoon progressed.
His first important save came with a close-range block following Nathan Ake’s turn in the box, and he has to tip wide Lewis Cook’s long ranger midway through the second period. He saved the best stops til last however to keep Saints ahead late on. Two shots from Ryan Fraser – a low strike and a deflected, looping effort – were brilliantly kept out to further prove McCarthy’s importance to Saints whatever league they are in next season.
. Goalkeeper. Southampton. ALEX MCCARTHY

6. Seemed in a determined mood to help his team through but didn’t really get much space to bomb forward. Kept things simple when under pressure which is important when Saints are in this situation.. Right Wing-Back. Southampton. CEDRIC SOARES

6. Perhaps his worst display since coming into the Saints defence, but perhaps to be understood in such a high pressure atmosphere. His teammates managed to carry him through the game too and the win was ultimately a great team effort. With Jack Stephens waiting in the wings, Bednarek looked slow at times but needs praise for his performances before this game.. Centre-Back. Southampton. JAN BEDNAREK

7. Another strong performance in the centre of a defensive three. He won some important aerial duels and tried to make sure Callum Wilson couldn’t turn on the ball. Has been the best performing centre-back this season and looks to be carrying that into the final games.. Centre-Back. Southampton. MAYA YOSHIDA

6. Looked fairly clumsy for most of the game and was beaten too easily on a couple of occasions. He did show the defensive ability that he has late on though with a great last-ditch challenge on Jermain Defoe, and perhaps that can be the catalyst for some more dominant displays from the Dutchman.. Centre-Back. Southampton. WESLEY HOEDT

Left Wing-Back. Southampton. RYAN BERTRAND. 7. Good defensive display from Bertrand and he could have had a second-half goal for himself too. He made sure he pressed Ryan Fraser back when he could and gave his opposite number no width or space to operate for much of the game. A difficult scoring chance came his way when received a lofted Tadic pass, but could only shoot straight at Begovic after having to take it quickly.
