Goalkeeper and Defenders

Angus Gunn – Goalkeeper – 7

First appearance for the club and did what was asked of him well. One save saw him fly to his left and tip wide as the ball seemed destined for the top corner.

The young Englishman has certainly added some great competition for the number 1 shirt and could have Alex McCarthy looking over his shoulder at times this season.

Jack Stephens – Right-Back – 6

Not his natural position and doesn’t have the attacking abilities of Cedric, but he did his job well throughout the game.

Seems to be down the pecking order now in terms of Centre-Backs and appearances from now on could be few and far between.

Jan Bednarek – Centre-Back – 7

One very good block to deny Kayal a free shot at goal from close range. Has always been a reliable presence since playing his first games for the club at the end of last season.

Maya Yoshida – Centre-Back – 7

After not featuring for Saints in the opening Premier League games, this was his opportunity to get himself in contention again. Had a rebound cleared off the line from Elyounoussi’s header.

A solid display alongside Bednarek will have only strengthened his chances of starting against Crystal Palace at the weekend.

Matt Targett – Left-Back – 6.5

Some dangerous trademark crosses into the area for Gabbiadini to scrap for, and he almost got an assist with a low ball across the area that found the Italian midway through the first-half.
