Goalkeeper and Defenders

Alex McCarthy, Goalkeeper – 5.5

Helpless with a lot of the goals so not to blame, but could have done more with the sixth even though the game was long gone by then.

Some key saves – particularly when one-on-one with Aguero in the first-half –  that kept the score from being even more.

Cedric Soares, Right-Back – 5

A tough task against a rampant Sane who had the Portuguese international backing towards his own goal all afternoon with support from Mendy.

Jack Stephens, Centre-Back – 5.5

Four interceptions and four clearances perhaps contributed towards keeping the score down, and Stephens was the pick of the defenders on the day despite the heavy defeat.

Has looked determined to keep his place in the side since returning and has so far.

Wesley Hoedt, Centre-Back – 4.5

A small improvements in previous games, this was another game where Hoedt would look panicked, clumsy and out of position.

Although the best defenders are tested against the City attack, he looked hurried in possession and slammed the ball into the net for an own-goal and the opening goal of the contest.

Ryan Bertrand, Left-Back – 5

Great ball to set Ings through on goal to win the Saints penalty, but it would be his defending that would let him down in this game.

Run ragged by Sterling, who beat him to the byline too easily on a number of occasions leading to some of the goals. Also turned his back on the England winger in the first-half which allowed City’s fourth to be scored.
