Southampton: 3 reasons to praise Austin’s referee outburst

Southampton striker Charlie Austin has escaped punishment from the FA after his post-match outburst following his side’s 1-1 draw with Watford on Saturday.

The 29-year-old was incensed at a decision made by referee Simon Hooper, who judged Maya Yoshida to be in an offside position and interfering with play as Austin scored what he thought was Saints’ second goal of the game.

Television replays showed that Yoshida had made no movement towards the ball and that he was not obscuring the vision of Watford goalkeeper Ben Foster as Austin’s shot came in.

After having worked hard to try and secure a first home win of the season, Saints players and Mark Hughes were critical of the performance of the officials who had also waived away Watford claims for what looked like a blatant second-half penalty.

It is rare to see players speak their minds like Austin did, and it was certainly refreshing to see.
