Manchester City vs. Southampton live stream: Watch Premier League Online
By Adam Lassner
After Southampton’s unfortunate loss to Inter Milan in the Europa League, the Saints are set to visit Premier League leaders, Manchester City.
At St. Mary’s last weekend, Southampton topped Burnley 3-1. Charlie Austin had a brace and Nathan Redmond found the back of the net on a well timed volley. The side was unlucky to lose their clean sheet streak to a 72nd minute Burnley penalty.
On Thursday however, the Saints were less fortunate as they lost 1-0 to Inter Milan at the famed San Siro. Southampton dominated much of the game but fell to a second half Antonio Candreva goal, which came from Inter’s only shot on target.
Manchester City drew Everton 1-1 at the Etihad last weekend. Nolito brought the Citizens back into the match less than 10 minutes after Romelu Lukaku gave Everton the lead. City surprisingly had two penalties saved by Maarten Stekelenburg. In the Champions League midweek, City were knocked by Barcelona 4-0 in manager Pep Guardiola’s return to Camp Nou.
Even though City have been in a bit of a slump and Saints are flying high, most would tip City to come out on top this weekend. The key match up for this fixture will be Virgil van Dijk vs. Sergio Agüero.
Virgil van Dijk has been the rock in Southampton’s back line so far this season. While dominant in the air, he also has an immense ability to read the play and lead the whole back line. Van Dijk, while covering Agüero, will also have to keep an eye on the rest of City’s attacking options. Van Dijk will not be able to stop City’s attack on his own, but his leadership and communication will allow the Saints to slow down the Citizens when they go forward.
Over the past few seasons, Sergio Agüero has been one of the most prolific strikers in the Premier League and in Europe. Fortunately for the Saints, Agüero has been out of form as of late, but he should never been underrated. While Kevin De Bruyne may pull the strings in City’s attack, Agüero is the likely target man and one who van Dijk needs to watch very carefully.
Southampton and City split the fixtures last season with City winning 3-1 at home in November and the Saints winning at St. Mary’s 4-2 in May.
Saints boss Puel knows that this weekend’s match is going to be quite a tough test but expects a good result.
"“I expect a good game from my players with quality to continue this work, but with a different result… We can see from the last result against Internazionale when you can play a good game without a good result and I hope for Manchester City, against a very good team, for a strong game,” Puel said."
