Three takeaways from yesterday’s draw between Southampton and Liverpool
By Chris Hughes
Maya Yoshida needs a new contract ASAP
He’s played second-fiddle and with criticism over the years but this season Yoshida has matured rapidly as a player. He’s quickly become the experienced centre-back within the available roster, and has thrived as a result.
The Japanese international produced two tackles and two blocks across the full 90, but also cleared the ball a total of nine times, more than any other player on the pitch.
Yesterday’s performance also means that the 28-year-old hasn’t picked up a yellow card in 13 Premier League appearances, with his last coming in the loss to Burnley around the turn of the year.
Maya’s deal expires at the end of next season meaning clubs can start approaching him on pre-contract agreements in just 7 months. Making him put pen-to-paper is an absolute must this summer.
