Last night Southampton were defeated by a clinical Arsenal to make it five games without a win. It was their game without a goal.

Despite Arsene Wenger’s torrid record at St. Mary’s over the years, the Gunners made light-work of Southampton last night, soaking up the pressure before being clinical when they got a shooting chance.

Alexis Sanchez’s first goal – which featured a moment of magic – was Arsenal’s first shot on target on the hour mark. Earlier in the first half Dusan Tadic and Manolo Gabbiadini had a golden opportunity to put the Saints into the lead.

Despite the influential Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain going off injured in the first half, Wenger’s side were still in control and dominated possession, despite the Saints showing more attacking intent than they did against Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.

The result means eighth is all-but out the Saints’ grasp unless they can better West Brom’s results in two of the last three games. However Watford are only two points beneath them at the moment – they’re in 15th.

With all that in mind Saints Marching takes a look at three takeaways that can be made from Southampton’s loss to Arsenal.
