We need Charlie Austin back this season

A few weeks ago we had the opportunity to steal eighth place from West Brom, as we sat just a few points behind them with our games in-hand remaining. However with performances like last night’s becoming a recurring thing, Southampton have slipped off the pace.

Manolo Gabbiadini has struggled to return to the form he showed pre-injury, and has now gone five games without scoring. However his back-up competition in Jay Rodriguez and Shane Long are in even worse form themselves.

Claude Puel today said that said that Charlie Austin could feature this weekend against Middlesbrough, something that’s seen as a must-win for both the Saints and for Puel himself, who is under fire from the media and fans at the moment.

Austin has a knack for hot starts, having scored on his Saints debut last year, in addition to his impressive start to the season. Southampton could do with a burst of form when he returned to finish the season on a high.
