Southampton and their board will reportedly be approaching the Premier League in the coming days, in order to report fellow side Liverpool.

The Virgil van Dijk transfer saga has taken another twist, with the Dutchman’s club now looking to officially report would-be suitors Liverpool over what has been considered an illegal approach for the defender.

Last month chairman Ralph Krueger insisted that the club were in no position to sell their best players whatever the price, with the majority of Saints’ stars tied down on long contracts – that includes VVD, who signed a six-year deal last summer.

Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool have all been credited with serious interest in the former Celtic defender across the past few months, but Liverpool have been leading the race as of late if media gossip is to be believed.

However the club have made it clear that no formal bid has been received for the 25-year-old, who is valued as highly as £60 million. However ten percent of whatever fee is received would be owed to former employers Celtic.

Nonetheless Southampton are under the impression that Liverpool are making a deliberate attempt to unsettle van Dijk, with reports last month suggesting that the Dutch international would be interested in moving to Merseyside if they reached the Champions League.

Jurgen Klopp’s side ended up finishing fourth and therefore rumours sparked that van Dijk wanted a move to the Reds, something which has been denied by the club, who are desperate to keep hold of their team captain.

Van Dijk joined the Saints in 2015 for around £13 million. In total he has made 68 appearances in two seasons, scoring seven goals. The tally would’ve been higher if he hadn’t spent the last five months out with an injury he suffered against Leicester in January.
