Ryan Bertrand grabs assist in England’s defeat to France
By Chris Hughes
Highly-rated left-back Ryan Bertrand was on form despite England’s friendly defeat tonight.
The former Chelsea full-back continued his stint as the nation’s first-choice in his position tonight, as he started in England’s 3-2 defeat to France.
Bertrand acted as a wing-back with Phil Jones, Gary Cahill and John Stones playing as a back three, with Keiran Trippier the 27-year-old’s opposite number.
The Southampton man’s highlight of the game came early on, as he assisted Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane with a low cross. He was found by winger Raheem Sterling after Bertrand made a trademark overlapping run.
Barcelona defender Samuel Umtiti then scored a rebound after Tom Heaton produced a good save from Olivier Giroud in the 22nd minute. France then scored their second rebound of the game as Djibril Sidibe scored after the Burnley stopper produced a save from tricky winger Ousmane Dembele.
The French were then down to ten men as the Three Lions equalised through Harry Kane once again. Bertrand had earlier tested Kane’s teammate Lloris with a low drive.
Dortmund’s young man Dembele then won the game for Didier Deschamps’ men with a solid finish past Heaton to end the game at 3-2.
Bertrand could be on his way out of Southampton is reports are to be believed, with a move to Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.
