Southampton have a habit of promoting players from within, with many proving that buying in players is not always the answer. An academy that can boast producing Theo Walcott, Adam Lallana & Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale.

Currently James Ward-Prowse is the only player with a permanent birth in the Southampton first-team squad having been promoted from the youth setup.

Sam McQueen began the season as a key part of the team in Ryan Bertrand’s absence but was soon dropped upon the England left-back’s return. Matt Targett is another name who has knocked on the door, but injuries last campaign forced him into a backseat role.

It is with no doubt that Southampton will continue to produce quality youngsters and bleed them into the first team. But who will be the lucky few this coming season?

Conor Dunford has his say on who he would like to see rack up the appearances this season.
