The young Southampton defender is hoping for a strong campaign after a year of injury turmoil on the south coast.

With Ryan Bertrand’s future currently up in the air, Southampton’s two other left-backs will be trying their hardest to showcase their talents ahead of the upcoming season.

Sam McQueen – who is naturally a winger – fitted Claude Puel’s system due to his ability to push forward and overlap, but you could argue that he lacked the natural discipline an out-and-out full-back would have.

Whilst Matt Targett might not be as talented going forward, his ability on the defensive end comfortably makes up for that. However last season his progress was halted by a long spell on the sidelines.

The 21-year-old made just eight appearances in all competitions as he suffered a long-term hamstring injury which kept him out of the game for seven months.

However the local lad his now aiming for an impressive bounce-back campaign, which could be vital to his chances of becoming a regular in the Southampton squad. Speaking to Southampton’s official media team, the young defender spoke of his desire to learn under Mauricio Pellegrino as quick as he can:

"“I’m happy to be back. I had a nice holiday but now I’m looking to hit the ground running. It’s strange, especially when you have a new manager because you just want to get back and try to impress him as quickly as you can.More from Saints MarchingGrading the Southampton Transfer Window Part 2: ArrivalsGrading the Southampton Transfer Window Part 1: DeparturesIt’s time to talk about Gavin BazunuRain clouds on the horizon? I spoke to a few of the lads to see how training has been and it’s nice to see what they think. I didn’t play in the Euros so it was important for me to get back early and start working.”"

Targett will want to make a good impression on his new Argentinian gaffer, with the back-up left-back spot very much up for grabs in the forthcoming campaign.

What’s more, if the Saints do chose to sell Ryan Bertrand then the opportunity arises for either of the young English pairing to perhaps become the Saints’ starting full-back. However with Manchester City targeting Benjamin Mendy as of late, it seems like Southampton’s star left-back will be staying a little while longer.
