Kevin Wimmer

This isn’t a new rumour, but it’s one that keeps on re-emerging.

Since arriving at Tottenham from German outfit 1.FC Köln in the summer of 2015, Wimmer has struggled to displace the first choice pairing of Alderweireld and Vertongen at the heart of the Spurs defence.

He made only 10 appearances in all competitions last season – even less than his first season at Whitehart Lane – and is now said to be looking for an exit.

Tottenham are keen to keep him, seeing him as an important squad player. However it is thought that a bid of £20m would be enough to turn their heads.

Of all the options here, Wimmer may fit the mould of a potential Van Dijk replacement best. The 24-year-old will still feel he has a lot to prove in the Premier League, and Southampton have a great track record of nurturing players in similar situations.

Whether he is good enough to parachute straight into the Saints first team is not as clear. The fact that he hasn’t played much in the past couple of seasons may have hampered his progression as a player, but Wimmer is still young. He will be confident that a move could reignite the form that earned him a move to North London in the first place.
