The 25-year-old Argentine joins the London outfit after a lack of playing time for Southampton.
Gazzaniga, now to play under former Saints manager Mauricio Pochettino, leaves Saints after a mixed time at the south-coast club. Rumoured for some time now, it is no surprise that the six-foot-five man has finally departed.
Joining from lower-tier side Gillingham in 2012, and making a small and scattered amount of appearances across a five-year period, Gazzaniga showed great promise in his first year with the club, making nine appearances in the Premier League under then manager Nigel Adkins. He beat the likes of Artur Boruc and Kelvin Davis to the first team at the time.
So given the potential, it was thought the goalkeeper would one day be a starter at the club.
However, he struggled to hold down a starting place against the likes of Fraser Froster and Alex McCarthy in recent years. The 25-year-old was sent out on loan last season to Rayo Vallecano in Spain, this to gain some more playing time. Fans alike were rating him as the third-best keeper at the time.
Since then he has become surplus to requirements, additions of other goalkeepers Stuart Taylor and Harry Lewis last summer, and Jack Rose this one, helping to confirm this. Though not on his level currently, Lewis and Rose having great potential. Whilst lack of playing time stagnating Paulo’s progression.
Following the departure, Saints thanked Gazzaniga for his service to the club via their official site.
"“Everyone at Southampton would like to thank Paulo for his dedication during his time with the club and we wish him the very best in the future.” – Quote via Southampton’s article."
Gazzaniga will feature a third-choice stopper for the Spurs, behind Hugo Lloris and Michel Vorm.
