Shane Long

This was a game that screamed for the pacey Irish International.  Mauricio Pellegrino fortunately recognized this and made Long the first man off the bench in the 64th minute.

Long put in a workman-like performance and created three great chances on goal. He showed some touch curling a pass around the defense to James Ward-Prowse that resulted in a penalty shout.  He then ran straight by the defense twice and delivered crosses from the right to Redmond and Bertrand respectively.

He may have had a goal himself late on had Maya Yoshida let a Sam McQueen cross get to the far post.

It was a positive impact from a Saints sub for the second straight matchday.  Shane Long may need to be patient to get his opportunities. However, he proved his worth to the team and showed me another reason why Southampton should keep him on the roster.
