Southampton: Loan player update – August 18
Jordy Clasie – Club Brugge
With no European football to stretch the squad this season, Jordy Clasie’s first team opportunities at Southampton were going to be few and far between. He was loaned to Belgian side Club Brugge a couple of days before the transfer deadline, a move that worked for all parties.
Unlike Saints, Brugge are competing in the Europa League this season, and will be expected to challenge for the Belgian title. This could be a positive move Clasie, as at 26 he needs challenges that will aid his career, not just his development.
A week after joining, Clasie replaced the amazingly-named Marvelous Nakamba after 70 minutes against Mouscron, but couldn’t turn around the 2-1 deficit.
He was then an 80th minute substitute in the 2-0 win against Mechelen a week later.
Clasie will want to see serious game time at his temporary club soon, and will be hoping for a mid-week start in the cup and an opportunity to impress manager Ivan Leko.
