Midfielders

6.5. Romeu again was not as neat and tidy as he has typically shown. A couple of poor giveaways in the defensive half are uncharacteristic and needs to be cleaned up. His second half performance was much stronger as the Saints overran United’s midfield, but I think that was more indicative of his partner’s play. Romeu also missed the chance of the game as he pounced on a free ball inside the 6 yard box, but scuffed it wide.. Defensive-Midfielder. Southampton. ORIOL ROMEU

8. Super Mario was fantastic again pairing aside Romeu in the midfield. He outplayed Marouane Fellaini in every aspect of the game, and beat him one-on-one in the center of the pitch with ease. His ability to retain possession under pressure has brought real stability Saints possession stats. I would just like to see him take more chances going forward, but that was not his role against United.. Defensive Center-Midfielder. Southampton. MARIO LEMINA

Davis had a significant impact in Southampton’s control of the midfield. In the first half specifically, he was key in Pellegrino’s pressing style, forcing United to turn the ball over when they looked like they could counter. He was far too passive going forward in the number 10 role, and his only shot attempt was well hit, but well over. However, his commitment and hard work cannot be overlooked.. Center-Midfielder. Southampton. STEVEN DAVIS. 7.5

Attacking-Midfielder. Southampton. NATHAN REDMOND. 7. Nathan had one of his stronger performances of the season as he made life difficult for Antonio Valenica on the left side. He showed more confidence in one-on-one situations and created opportunities with some good crosses into the box. He had one of the chances of the match fall to him on a corner in the first half, but he flashed it high and wide. Although he found himself with shooting opportunities more frequently due to his positive movement across the field.

Attacking-Midfielder. Southampton. DUSAN TADIC. 6. Tadic, like most of the Saints players, had one of his better games of the season. Although he never truly made an impact in his 90 minutes. There was a moment in the first half where he broke forward with pace, but the referee missed Nemanja Matic clip him from behind. He primarily played on the right side, but found little space to cut in on his favored left foot. He also looks a step to slow as he blew a couple chances to cross the ball when he found himself open inside the penalty box.
