Forwards and Substitutes

5. Drifted in and out of the game, and didn’t really provide enough even though Saints’ defensive mindset hindered him slightly. Could and probably should have scored when he collected a Boufal cutback in the box but saw his shot deflected wide. Needs to speed his game up and not take so many touches when in and around the oppositions area.. Right-Wing. Southampton. DUSAN TADIC

Southampton. SOFIANE BOUFAL. 6. Rewarded with a start after last weekend’s match winning display. Wasn’t involved in the game as much as he would have liked as he had to track back and defend a lot. Had some nice moments on the ball including tricky play to set up Tadic’s close effort in the first-half. Deserves a run of games in the after showing what he can do last week.. Left-Wing

Striker. Southampton. MANOLO GABBIADINI. 5. Really, really isolated, and not through any fault of his own. Was left up top on his own and suffered after Saints sat back on their lead, even though Brighton were there for the taking at that stage. One half-chance in the match when he met Bertrand’s low cross to the front post, but his flicked shot was blocked wide. Saints need to play to his strengths more; not lump long balls up to him to try and do something with.

1st Substitute. Southampton. NATHAN REDMOND. 5. Came on in the 74th minute to try and get at the tiring Brighton defence, but struggled to get into the game. Will rightly have to work hard to get back his place in the team after Boufal’s recent form.

5. Dropped to the bench for Boufal to allow more potential creativity from wide areas and a more rigid formation for Saints. Came on in the 84th minute and didn’t have enough time to influence the game at all.. 2nd Substitute. Southampton. SHANE LONG

Replaced Ward-Prowse with 6 minutes left in an attempt to see out the game. Like Long, didn’t have chance to get into the game but it’s good to see him back in the squad at least. A talented midfielder who Saints can still reap the benefits of in years to come.. 3rd Substitute. Southampton. PIERRE-EMILE HOJBJERG. 5
