FRASER FORSTER

CEDRIC SOARES
Right-Back | Southampton

Got forward well and into crossing positions, but the Saints attack were never going to win the ball in the air. Did his defensive duties well and kept Brighton winger Izquierdo close to not allow him space in behind.
VIRGIL VAN DIJK
Centre-Back | Southampton

Another good performance from Van Dijk, who wasn’t overly worked. He did seem to stroll around a bit, but was always there to snuff out any potentially dangerous Brighton attacks. Made a good block from Izquierdo’s shot near the end of the game.
WESLEY HOEDT
Centre-Back | Southampton

Brought back into the team and replaced Yoshida, who hadn’t done a lot wrong. Then again, Hoedt hadn’t done a lot wrong to be sat on the bench either. Like Van-Dijk, he didn’t have much to do defensively but he did try to bring the ball out and play incisive passes through the Brighton midfield when he could. Had a half-chance at the end of the game with a header that went wide.
RYAN BERTRAND
Left-Back | Southampton

Didn’t find so much freedom to get forward as Cedric on the opposite flank, but had a solid game nonetheless. Part of him not bombing on may have been to stifle Knockaert’s influence on the match, and he did that pretty well. Full-backs need to form partnerships with the wingers in front of them, and it would be nice to see those links forming more in the coming matches.
