Charlie Austin

This match was also Austin’s first start of the season with Manolo Gabbiadini and Shane Long favoured ahead of him so far.

The striker took his chance though with two great headers in the second-half. Twice he cleverly found space between the Everton centre-halves and planted crosses from Ryan Bertrand and Dusan Tadic past a helpless Jordan Pickford.

Austin also had two good chances to add to his tally in the first-half; his first effort sliced over the bar when off-balance and his second hit the post.

He is clearly the most natural finisher that the Saints have in their squad and deserves a run in team now in the busy festive fixture list.
