Goalkeeper and Defenders

Goalkeeper. Southampton. FRASER FORSTER. 7. Kept Saints in the game when City broke through the stubborn defence in front of him. Kept Fernandinho, Jesus and De Bruyne at bay with important saves in one of his better performances of the season. Nothing he could have done to stop Sterling’s late, late winner.

5. Went off injured late in the game, and many will be hoping it isn’t too serious. Limited effectiveness going forward with his main job to keep Gabriel Jesus quiet, which he did with some success. If fit, will be important in a Saints side with more attacking freedom on Sunday.. Wing-Back. Southampton. CEDRIC SOARES

Centre-Back. Southampton. MAYA YOSHIDA. 4. An uncharacteristically sloppy display from the Japanese international. Gave away the free-kick that led to City’s first goal, and also missed a golden first-half opportunity to put Saints ahead from Van Dijk’s knock down. Also careless in possession on occasion. Will have better days in the rest of the season.

Centre-Back. Southampton. VIRGIL VAN DIJK. 5. A solid display for most of the 90 at the heart of the defence. Let De Bruyne’s low free-kick skew in off his boot when trying to clear, but worked well with his teammates to keep the wealth attacking talent facing them away from goal.

6. Had Saints’ best chance in the first-half when he headed against the bar. Solid contribution to keep Aguero and co quiet, and fits the 3 man defence well with his strong left foot. Looks to be very consistent in his performance levels so far.. Centre-Back. Southampton. WESLEY HOEDT

RYAN BERTRAND. 6. Did a good job on England teammate Raheem Sterling, so found it difficult to influence the game going forward. Was always a threat with set piece deliveries which could have proved so important in the match for his side. Has proven his attacking and defensive worth to Saints in the last two matches having registered two assists against Everton.. Wing-Back. Southampton
