Southampton continued their woeful home record in 2017 with a 1-1 draw with Huddersfield Town.

Another five changes, including the absence of Virgil van Dijk, were on the cards for Mauricio Pellegrino. Citing the busy festive period as a reason to rest his superstar.

The game opened extremely choppy, with little possession, and a lot of fouls. Huddersfield were more on the front foot, and nearly took the lead with opportunities for Aaron Mooy and Christopher Schindler. The latter forcing a very good save from Fraser Forster on a glancing header.

Charlie Austin was to the rescue again, and scored a creative goal in the 26th minute from a Wesley Hoedt header. Although, in the second half, he failed to put the game away after a beautiful setup from Nathan Redmond.

Huddersfield dangerman, Laurent Depoitre, was allowed a free header in the 63rd minute which would prove to be enough for the Terriers to take a point.

With back-to-back trips to Wembley and Old Trafford on the horizon, Southampton have a world of work to do just three points clear of relegation.

Here are the player ratings from the match with Huddersfield.
