After a woeful trip to Wembley on Boxing Day, a completely different attitude was displayed by Southampton at Old Trafford as they held Manchester United to a 0-0 stalemate.

A resolute performance from Saints saw United regularly frustrated in front of the 70,000 home supporters and goalkeeper Alex McCarthy, who came in for out-of-form Fraser Forster, was rarely tested dangerously.

The team looked completely different from that who were smashed by Spurs on Tuesday which is very promising to see ahead of what will be a crucial run of games over the next few weeks.

All eyes were on the Saints after they sold star player Virgil van Dijk to Liverpool to a massive £75 million, and at the back both Maya Yoshida and Wesley Hoedt delivered.
