Striker and Substitutes

7. Arguably his best performance so far this season, Long really helped up front. His work ethic is always brilliant as he continues to run at defenders and charge them down. Yes, his game this season is severely lacking goals but the striker put United defenders, Lindelof especially, under real pressure. It was a shame that he didn’t do better with his opportunity but, in fairness, it was a great save by De Gea.. Striker. Southampton. SHANE LONG

Substitute defensive-midfielder. Southampton. MARIO LEMINA. 5. The midfielder only had 10 minutes to shine and came on as an extra defender. He did nothing significant besides a few decent dribbles and losing the ball once.

4. Gabbiadini also had little time to do anything and was a like for like substitute. In a game where Saints weren’t really creating chances, the Italian couldn’t have done a lot besides putting pressure on the United defense. Unfortunately, the ball was in Southampton’s half for most of the final 10 minutes.. Substitute striker. Southampton. MANOLO GABBIADINI

Substitute winger. Southampton. NATHAN REDMOND. 3. Coming on in the 85th minute meant that Redmond couldn’t really have done anything. The winger didn’t touch the ball to my memory but arguably helped in defense towards the end.
