Yesterday afternoon Southampton drew 1-1 with Tottenham Hotspur after the away side failed to show the same form as they did on Boxing Day.

In fact, it was the Saints who went 1-0 up after a teasing cross from captain Ryan Bertrand was deflected off centre-back Davinson Sanchez into his own net.

However, Southampton would hold onto their lead for only a matter of minutes, as Harry Kane scored his 99th Premier League goal for Tottenham from a corner after some slack marking from the Saints.

The result wasn’t enough to get the Saints out of the bottom three however, with new Stoke City boss Paul Lambert guiding his side to victory on the Saturday. With Swansea playing tonight, the gap between 18th and 20th could become as narrow as two points.

Spurs meanwhile will be hoping that the Welsh side pull off an upset against Liverpool on Monday Night Football, with two dropped points against the Saints meaning the Reds could make the gap between fourth and fifth as many as five points.

But what talking points can be drawn from the 1-1 encounter?
