Southampton struggled to a 2-0 defeat to Liverpool on Sunday evening as first-half strikes from Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah saw the away side win at a canter.

The first-half intensity from Saints was fairly decent and they were able to test Reds keeper Loris Karius on a few occasions, but mistakes and slack closing down around their own area led to them going into the break two goals down.

In the second-half, Southampton fans were expecting to see some battle and fight from their side to provide hope ahead of the remainder of the season, but Saints couldn’t lay a glove on their opponents and only produced one shot after half-time.

This was a disheartening display for all involved after the recent improvement in results, and it is now vitally important that the team pick themselves up ahead of their most favourable run of fixtures of this campaign.
