Midfielders

7. A rare partnership of Lemina and Hojbjerg in defensive-midfield was deployed in this game, with Oriol Romeu dropping to the bench. Lemina showed some flashes of skill and was economical with the ball as usual, and perhaps him and Hojbjerg both have more ball carrying ability than Romeu when Saints are struggling to push forwards.. Defensive-Midfield. Southampton. MARIO LEMINA

5. An inconsistent afternoon for Hojbjerg, who showed some good and bad play throughout the match. He misplaced a few passes, and overran the ball on occasion, but his pairing with Lemina ultimately gave Saints a more mobile presence in the centre of the pitch. Hojbjerg’s form has been great since returning to the first-team set up though, so a small lapse was expected sooner or later.. Defensive-Midfield. Southampton. PIERRE-EMILE HOJBJERG

6. Redmond regained a starting place ahead of the game, and looked to be keen to prove himself early on. His pace was always going to trouble West Brom’s defence, and he managed to break beyond them on a number of occasions. His influence of the game faded in the second-half however, but he will need to be ready for when he’s called upon in Saints’ run of vital upcoming games. Left-Midfield. Southampton. NATHAN REDMOND

6. Ward-Prowse continued his impressive form in the attacking third with another assist at the Hawthorns. His whipped corner delivery fell perfectly to the unmarked Wesley Hoedt, and the Dutchman dispatched with aplomb. This means that the England international has scored or assisted six of Southampton’s last 11 goals in all competitions.. Right-Midfield. Southampton. JAMES WARD-PROWSE

Attacking-Midfield. Southampton. DUSAN TADIC. 6. The Serbian drifted in and out of the game too much, and didn’t really show enough desire in his challenges with opponents. The one bit of quality that he did produce won the game though. He arrived into the box after a fast counter involving Nathan Redmond and Guido Carrillo and dinked a lovely finish over the onrushing Ben Foster. We need to see much more of this from Tadic for the remainder of the campaign.
