Striker and Substitutes

7. Carrillo looks to be adjusting well to the Southampton team, and more progress was made in this cup tie. He held the ball up well and won some aerial duels against a challenging home defence. He would also assist Tadic for the second Saints goal with a well executed hook into the middle of the penalty area. Any criticism of Carrillo at this stage is unfair, and he has done well considering how isolated he has been up front so far.. Striker. Southampton. GUIDO CARRILLO

MANOLO GABBIADINI. 5. It was nice to see the underused Gabbiadini come on as a sub and Saints go with two upfront momentarily. The Italian looked understandably rusty and short of mach sharpness. Perhpas the biggest indication of this was when he received the ball just outside the area with a clear path to goal, but he elected to pass wide to Tadic rather than take on the shot himself.. 1st Substitute. Southampton

6. Romeu came on late in the game to help Saints see out the win, and he won a number of headers from long balls forward from West Brom. It’s likely that the Spaniard will return to the starting line-up against Burnley in the league.. 2nd Substitute. Southampton. ORIOL ROMEU

3rd Substitute. Southampton. JOSH SIMS. 7. Sims returned to the squad and gave the Saints fans one exciting moment late on. He received the ball, lined up his man and burnt past him like he wasn’t even there. His resulting low cross almost produced a third goal too, but James Ward-Prowse’s shot was well blocked.
