Goalkeeper & Defenders

6. Not his best but not his worst. The saaints stopper has been very impressive since returning to the team and was unlucky for the Burnley goal after making a smart initial save from Jeff Hendrick. However he was lucky to escape any punishment from Bobby Madley when he handled the ball outside of his area to intercept a through ball intended for Aaron Lennon.. Goalkeeper. Southampton. ALEX MCCARTHY

5. An off day for the ever reliable full-back, he offered very little of an attacking threat and was pinned back by a strong Burnley left hand side. Stephen Ward and Aaron Lennon controlled Southampton’s right flank for much of the game, the latter created the Burnley goal for which Cerdic was mainly culpable.. Right-Back. Southampton. CEDRIC SOARES

Southampton. JACK STEPHENS. 6. A quiet afternoon for Stephens, he dealt with Ashley Barnes physicality fairly well but didn’t react quickly enough to Alex McCarthy’s save to prevent Burley taking the lead. You could argue that he played the ball long too often and in situations where we have come accustom to seeing him bring the ball out so elegantly.. Centre-Back

WESLEY HOEDT. 6. Again not a busy afternoon for the Dutchman, he won his fair share of aerial duels but like Stephens, he cleared high and long at the earliest opportunity. It was quite evidently a back to basics defensive display following some recent individual errors.. Centre-Back. Southampton

Southampton. RYAN BERTRAND. 6. Captaining the side again the full-back was ineffective going forward but untroubled defensively for the majority of the game. Bertrand is one of the few players in the side who delivers real quality into the box. The team always looks more dangerous when he is in the final third. Credit where its due to Burnley, both Matthew Lowton and Johan Berg Gudmundsson  nullified Bertrand very effectively. Im still not sure wether he is enough of a leader to warrant the captains armband.. Left-Back
