Burnley 1-1 Southampton: Three key takeaways
By Erik Franzo
Southampton escaped the relegation zone with a desperate 90th minute goal from Manolo Gabbiadini at Turf Moor.
Sean Dyche’s Burnley side played an extremely organized game, controlling possession at over 70% in significant stretches. They took the lead on a scrappy Ashley Barnes goal in the 67th minute, and looked well on their way to three points.
Josh Sims may have been the man of the match, despite playing only 22 minutes. Sims just missed scoring his first goal of the season, if not for a highlight reel save by goalkeeper Nick pope.
Mauricio Pellegrino used all his attacking substitutes in the final minutes in order to grab an important away point. Manolo Gabbiadini turned out to be the hero, with a great finish, assisted by a Guido Carrillo knockdown header.
The draw likely saved Pellegrino’s job for another week and will help build momentum heading into an important run of games.
Here are three key takeaways from the match.
