Southampton got off to the perfect start under Mark Hughes after a hard fought 2-0 win against Wigan.

It was a refreshing performance from Southampton after a miserable last few months. The Saints came up against massive underdogs Wigan, who have endured an incredible cup run beating the likes of Man City and Bournemouth.

Wigan, who look certain for promotion from League One, play an excellent brand of football. Attacking and on the floor is certainly appealing to the eye and can be very effective. Therefore, despite being heavy favourites this was never going to be an easy game.

In the first half, Wigan were the better team and created a lot of good opportunities. However, in the second half, Southampton showed they were the Premier League side with a very competent display and goals from Pierre Hojbjerg and Cedric Soares gave Southampton the victory.

Although, it wasn’t  the performance that was most pleasing. It was the fight, determination and positivity that Saints played with was different to what we have seen this season. Every player gave it their all, worked for the team and put in a decent display.

However, who was Southampton’s key man from the game? Our contributor Jack Deery gives his picks.
