Yesterday afternoon Southampton booked their place at Wembley by overcoming Wigan Athletic on their own stomping ground.

In doing so, the Saints will face off against Chelsea in the semi-finals next month, knowing that one good performance over 90 minutes would send them through to their second cup final in as many years.

New boss Mark Hughes got off the perfect start despite the Saints being up against it for much of the the first 45. The Saints managed to score twice after half time with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Cedric Soares both grabbing their first goals for the club to see the Saints through.

As a result there is an air of happiness around Southampton and their fanbase – whilst Wigan are hardly Manchester United the result will hopefully springboard the club into the crucial games that follow.

The Saints now have a two-week break before their next fixture however, with the West Ham game taking place at the end of the month – they also have the yet-to-be-rearranged fixture against Swansea at some point too.

But looking back to yesterday, what takeaways can be drawn aside from the fact that Southampton are Wembley bound?
