Goalkeeper and Defenders

7. Alex McCarthy has been one of Saints’ standout performers in 2018, since taking over from Fraser Forster at Christmas the shot stopper has been faultless and put in a another fine display. He had a couple of nervy moments in a tense affair but commanded his 18yrd box and reacted brilliantly to deny Jamie Vardy at close range. You have to feel that had McCarthy been between the sticks all season Saints may well have accumulated more points.. Goalkeeper. Southampton. ALEX MCCARTHY

6. I have been unimpressed with Cedric recently but the Portugese full-back put in a solid defensive display against the Foxes. He dealt with the pace and direct threat of Demari Gray very well. However it would have been nice to see some more adventurous forward play as for the majority of the game his starting position was too deep, he did get forward a few times, most notably firing wide from Shane Longs back post dink at the end of the first half.. Right-Back. Southampton. CEDRIC SOARES

7. Jack Stephens who? Many people were worried when the young Polish centre half was to be called upon to replace Stephens, but how little people have noticed him is testament to what a brilliant job he has done. He put in another competent display following his first Premier League appearance and goal against Chelsea last week.. Centre-Back. Southampton. JAN BEDNAREK

Centre-back. Southampton. MAYA YOSHIDA. 7. You know what you’re going to get from Maya, he is a top professional who always puts in 100%. He made several vital blocks and organised the back five well. Its been a long time since Saints have kept a clean sheet and Yoshida played a key role.

6.5. The big Dutchman has been wobbly in recent weeks, he put in a much better performance against Leicester, as did the entire Saints back line. However, he did gutlessly pull out of a tackle on the edge of the 18 yard box in the second half. Whenever i watch Wesley i get the feeling that he isn’t quite as committed as others players in the squad.. Centre-Back. Southampton. WESLEY HOEDT

Southampton. RYAN BERTRAND. 6.5. Bertrand was the better of the two full-backs, he offered more attacking threat the his compatriot linking up with Tadic nicely several times in the first half. But as with Cedric, his starting position was far too deep and in the second half he barely forayed forward at all. In a back three system, the wing-backs need to push on high and provide width and stretch the pitch. If they don’t do that its very easy for teams to press forward and dominate territorially..
