Striker and  Substitutes

Shane Long was a lonely figure up front for Saints, isolated for much of the game the Irishman chased every ball and hounded the Leicester back four as he always does. The issue with long is not his work ethic but his end product. He is often lamented for his wastefulness and poor goalscoring record but how are you supposed to score if your team doesn’t create any chances?. Striker. Southampton. SHANE LONG. 7

STEVEN DAVIS. 6. Introduced on 58 minutes for James Ward-Prowse, it was good to see Davis fit and back in Saints shirt, his experience and leadership will be vital in the closing stages of the season and Mark Hughes will be happy to have him back. He came on for the final 30 minutes and was solid in defence without offering much else.. Centre-Midfield. Southampton

Southampton. CHARLIE AUSTIN. 6. Disappointingly brought on in a like for like change with Shane Long, it would be nice to see Mark Hughes be more positive and let them both play together. Austin replaced Long on 73 minutes, he held the ball up and tried to bring others into play, the gap between himself and the Saints midfield was far to large. He was isolated for most of his brief cameo. Austin should really be starting games like this if Saints are to have any hope of escaping relegation.. Striker

NATHAN REDMOND. NA. Came on for Pierre Emile-Hojbjerg on 88 minutes, didn’t have enough time to make a real impact.. Right-Midfield. Southampton
