Goalkeeper and Defenders

8. Largely untested in the first-half despite Willian hitting the bar, but pulled off some great saves late on to keep the score down to 2-0. An important tip over from Hazard was the most eye-catching, but he also closed down a Morata shot well too when one-on-one with the Spaniard. McCarthy will be an important player to keep around next season even if Saints are in the Championship.. Goalkeeper. Southampton. ALEX MCCARTHY

Right Wing-Back. Southampton. CEDRIC SOARES. 6. More responsibility to provide the width on the right with Saints choosing to play 5-3-2 and found it difficult to get space and get in behind. Tried to drift inside when play was on the left but couldn’t really influence too much. May get more freedom against Bournemouth in what is a must win game for the team’s survival hopes.

Southampton. JAN BEDNAREK. 6. Has surprisingly looked confident and assured in his displays so far and he looked good in brief spells of involvement at Wembley too. Not too much to do but a couple of nice touched showed he can it in ahead of Jack Stephens’ return to the side.. Centre-Back

MAYA YOSHIDA. 7. Has been very good since coming back into the side in a three man central-defence. One fantastic last-ditch tackle to deny Hazard a free shot on goal early on was his stand out moment and he was probably Saints’ best defensive player on a day when their defending let them down again.. Centre-Back. Southampton

WESLEY HOEDT. 4. Clearly Hoedt has talent but he has let himself down with defensive mistakes this season. Here he allowed Morata to simply nod in Chelsea’s second and made a feeble attempt to stop the Spaniard scoring; not good enough when Saints are in the situation they’re in. He could have claimed an assist when his pass was dummied by Charlie Austin but Shane Long couldn’t score with a golden opportunity.. Centre-Back. Southampton

Left Wing-Back. Southampton. RYAN BERTRAND. 6. Got forward as much as possible but often limited to chipping balls forward for the strikers. Always a danger with his crossing ability but Chelsea often made sure that he didn’t have the space to do that, and so his effect on the match was limited. Like Cedric, may get more space to play with against Bournemouth next Saturday
