Striker and Substitutes

CHARLIE AUSTIN. 6. Not involved in attacks as much as he and Saints fans would like, but it was important that he started as the squads most potent goal threat. Tried to run in behind as much as he could, and almost produced a goal on two occasions. First, his mishit cross forced a good reaction from Begovic and then his low shot was deflected goalwards by Shane Long to bring another save from the Bosnian.. Striker. Southampton

7. On for Redmond on the hour and looked to press the opposition defence with his pace. Couple of opportunities to run through on goal but Bournemouth produced good challenges to halt him. With the two strikers not really working at Wembley last weekend, Long is a great asset to have from the bench. He is unlucky after some good performances recently though.. 1st Substitute. Southampton. SHANE LONG

6. On for Austin as Saints looked to get some more control in midfield and was a good asset to have on the pitch late on. Will be itching to start again next weekend but Mark Hughes has been given food for thought by Lemina’s performance. 2nd Substitute. Southampton. PIERRE-EMILE HOJBJERG

3rd Substitute. Southampton. JAMES WARD-PROWSE. N/A. Brought on to provide fresh legs in the 87th minute and produced one cynical foul to break up a Bournemouth attack.
