Wesley Hoedt

The Dutch defender produced a very composed display up until the final minutes of the game.

A number of good challenges, neat moves and raking cross-field passes had seen Hoedt show some of the form that saw Saints bring him to the club last summer.

He and others such as Cedric, Ryan Bertrand and Dusan Tadic have really upped their game in the last two matches. A rash challenge from Hoedt outside the area did force Alex McCarthy into a flying save from a Baines free-kick, but that was about the only mistake he made all evening.

He can take no blame for Everton’s equaliser however as the ball deflected off his foot and into the net; the devastation form every Saints player was clear to see at full-time.

However, he and the other players must take heart from the performance and go again on Tuesday at Swansea.
