Yesterday evening Southampton won their relegation six-pointer against Swansea, all-but confirming their Premier League survival on the penultimate game-week.

If the Welsh side are to absolutely thump Stoke City with both the Saints and Huddersfield losing their remaining fixtures badly, there is still a chance that Southampton could go down, but the odds are now very much in their favour.

After picking up four points from their last two games the Saints were full of confidence going into Tuesday night’s affair, although the home side dominated early proceedings before Mark Hughes’ side finally found their stride.

A second-half strike from substitute Manolo Gabbiadini was enough to see the Saints through to victory, thus seeing them climb to 16th on 36 points – two clear of the Terriers and three of the drop.

After the whole pre-game fiasco regarding a cancelled hotel and then a cancelled police escort both of which were far too coincidental to not be deliberate, Hughes will be thrilled to have all-but completed his job – keeping the Saints up.

So, aside from potential safety, what can drawn from yesterday’s victory in south Wales?
