Nils Petersen (Freiburg)

Southampton are in desperate need of a physical striker – Guido Carrillo wasn’t the answer and now both him and Gabbiadini could move on this summer.

Assuming both of them do, I don’t think the Saints need two new forwards – going off this wishlist, Promes could be the fourth-choice if that is really needed. However, for the best part, we only need three natural strikers – Petersen, Austin and Long fit the bill well.

Older than the other choices on this list, Petersen has been a bit of a late bloomer, having scored 64 goals in 114 appearances since joining Freiburg three and a half years ago.

Last season he was runner-up in the race for the Bundesliga’s top scorer behind Robert Lewandowski with 15 goals to his name.

Standing at six-foot-two and strong as well, Petersen could very well be available for within the region of £12-15 million or so – a bargain if he can score 10-15 goals for the Saints this coming season.
