In arguably the most important summer transfer window for some time, it will be a crucial for Southampton to boost Mark Hughes’ squad ahead of the 2018/19 season to avoid a repeat of 2017/18.

With player several players likely to leave the south coast this summer getting recruitment right will be vital. Not just bringing in high quality acquisitions but improving on what will leave – something the club has failed to do in the last three windows.

There is plenty of deadwood in the roster at this moment in time – players who have been given a get-out-of-jail free card by the board simply because they haven’t jumped ship like the others.

Mark Hughes may be keen for the board to invest in order for the Southampton side to reflect the style of play he is hoping to deploy, although for now it remains unclear what that’ll be.

A centre-half, pacey wide player and a gorward are a must before you even consider any outgoings. Here are five realistic transfer targets i think could improve the squad ahead of next season:
