Southampton made it very clear in January that Dutch winger Quincy Promes was their #1 target, however the deal never fully materialised and may not again this summer.

There are some reports which suggest that Spartak and the Saints agreed to a pre-contract deal  which meant that the attacker could move to the south coast if Southampton stayed in the top flight, although nothing regarding that has been confirmed thus far.

I firmly believe that signing Promes should be the Saints’ top priority this summer, as an injection of talent is desperately needed in the final third.

Whatever happens though, Southampton are in dire need of at least one new winger – only having Sofiane Boufal and Nathan Redmond as natural wide players was a crime in itself, and that was before the former expressed a desire to leave the club this summer.

The Saints therefore need to press on – the transfer window shuts earlier this year so there’s no reason why they shouldn’t start confirming signings this month,

But if we’re to go off the narrative that Southampton don’t land Promes this summer, who should they target instead?
