Southampton: 3 underrated goals from Saints’ 2017/18 season
By Marc Walker
1. Maya Yoshida vs Stoke
2017/18 was perhaps the season where Yoshida’s importance and fight for the team was truly emphasised, and he produced a brilliant moment here to draw Saints level.
Sofiane Boufal drove to the byline and cut the ball back to Shane Long, who deflected the ball towards Yoshida. The Japanese international then showed a great to produce a flying scissor kick that flew past Jack Butland.
Saints would come away from this one with no points in another bad display as Mark Hughes’ Stoke beat the team he would be in charge of come the end of the campaign.
Rumours linking Yoshida with a move away from the club this summer have surfaced since the season’s end, but it now looks like he will stay here for at least another year.
His transformation as a player since joining in 2012 cannot be understated and he has now become a favourite for many Saints fans.
