Earlier this afternoon Southampton suffered their first loss of pre-season, as Frank Lampard’s Derby County side rolled out as 3-0 winners over the Saints.

A brace from Tom Lawrence and another from Mason Bennett were enough to see the Rams onto their second pre-season victory in three games, whilst the Saints continued to regularly concede with today taking their tally to eight in just three matches.

However in the grand scheme of things, these results remain relatively unimportant, as they should instead mostly be about getting to know your new teammates and building up fitness again.

The match saw two more of Southampton’s summer arrivals make their first appearances in Jannik Vestergaard and Mohamed Elyounoussi as the Saints also debuted their fan-favourite yellow away kit.

All in all despite the changes in formation for the second 45, the performance was pretty disappointing regardless, but what talking points can be drawn from today’s defeat?
