Hughes pleased with improved performance level

Pre-season is largely about gaining fitness and bedding in new signings, but Saints will not have been happy with their performance against Derby County last weekend.

A comfortable victory here though will have brought some positivity back into the team, and manager Mark Hughes was encouraged by what he saw during this match and the whole week in France.

Speaking to southamptonfc.com, he said:

"“I think it’s always important after having such a good training camp, which we’ve had, that you finish off in the correct way, and I thought we did that. “It was a marked improvement on where we were last weekend. I think the old adage a week’s a long time in football applies, and the amount of work we’ve done this week obviously showed in our performance.”"

The Welshman will now hope for more progress from his side in two challenging home friendlies versus Celta Vigo and Borussia Mochengladbach in the coming week.
