Pre-season analysis: Southampton 3-2 Celta Vigo
By Chris Hughes
Armstrong looks really solid
Despite arriving for the cheapest fee of Southampton’s four summer arrivals, you’d be a brave man to suggest that Stuart Armstrong hasn’t been the Saints’ most impressive player from pre-season.
The Scot arrived for just £7 million and in the aftermath of losing out on James Maddison to Leicester, meaning expectations were not high for the ex-Celtic man.
However he was impressive again today, making positive attacking runs whilst playing behind the two forwards. He was rewarded in the second half with a smartly taken goal, assisted off a nice pass from Matt Targett.
Considering it appears that the Saints are pursuing another winger, Armstrong doesn’t feature in many supporters’ predicted XI’s for matchday 1 but as it stands, the 26-year-old seems an absolute shoe-in.
