Southampton fell to a concerning 3-0 defeat in their final pre-season game against Borussia Monchengladbach on Saturday.

The well-drilled German side went ahead through Patrick Herrmann, and were two to the good shortly after half-time following Denis Zakaria’s long-range strike. Herrmann later completed his brace as Southampton struggled to claw the game back.

Chances for Manolo Gabbiadini and Maya Yoshida came and went for Mark Hughes’ side, who displayed a worrying lack of cohesion in defence and couldn’t build consistent attacks throughout the afternoon.

Saints fans will now be hoping that this display is put behind them ahead of their team’s first Premier League game against Burnley next weekend.
