Saints Marching roundtable: Dream deadline day signings
By Marc Walker
Chris Hughes – Vincent Aboubakar
I’m keen to see the Saints sign another winger/supporting player before the end of the transfer window and for a wide range of prices the likes of David Neres, Miguel Almiron, Maxwel Cornet or Charly Musonda could all add something to Southampton’s squad. However ultimately I’m much more desperate to see the side bring in another striker and for that reason my pick of choice is Vincent Aboubakar.
I’m a massive fan of Maxi Gomez and Nicolai Jorgensen, but I believe the Cameroonian forward is the perfect middle ground between the two, with the former set to cost at least £30 million and the Dane having had a less than successful last campaign in the Eredivisie.
Southampton have recently been linked with Aboubakar’s teammate Moussa Marega, but I believe the former is the much more accomplished striker having not only consistently found the back of the net since 2013, but having also done it in France and Turkey as well as Portugal. The 26-year-old is strong in the air and physical, as well as being skillful and technically gifted too. He fits the bill perfectly, in my opinion. The only issue would raising funds, as we appear to only be spending what we’ve made from previous transfers this calendar year. However with this being my dream deadline day signing, I see Aboubakar as a really nice fit – his goals per minutes ratio last season was really impressive, at one every 135 minutes from a total of 15 scored.
At the time of writing the Saints still only have the four signings made in quick succession at the start of July – I’m a massive fan of our business so far but I think we’re a long way off being done for the summer. As I’ve mentioned, I believe more reinforcement out wide is also required in addition to Aboubakar, whether the board chose to splash the cash or look for a bargain for that winger.
