Midfielders

Ryan Bertrand – Left-wing-back/left-midfielder – 6.5

Bertrand played as both a wing-back and as a more natural left-back for the draw with the Clarets, and was relatively quiet as the away side did well to subdue the threat of both the Englishman and his partner-in-crime. Far from a bad game, but quiet.

Oriol Romeu – Centre-midfielder – 7

The Spaniard got the surprise nod ahead of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg but gave Hughes a serious selection headache with a nice game. He made three tackles and recorded over an 85% passing accuracy – good figures after his inconsistent last campaign.

Mario Lemina – Centre-midfielder – 6

Annoyingly, Lemina has looked rather disinterested in pre-season for whatever reason and things didn’t massively change in the Saints’ PL opener yesterday. Like normal he put up some good passing numbers but he didn’t have a great game.

Cedric Soares – Right-wing-back/right-midfielder – 6

Cedric started the game despite his lack of pre-season minutes, nullifying the rumours that he could be on his way out. Nonetheless, he only played 55 minutes as Mark Hughes switched formations and he was sacrificed as a result. Much like Bertrand, his first-half was quiet as Burnley defended well.

Stuart Armstrong – Attacking-midfielder – 7

Armstrong was arguably Southampton’s best player in pre-season and he was decent again yesterday, with a crunching tackle forcing him off with a suspected knock as Mark Hughes changed things before the hour. Hopefully he’s fit again for Everton.
