Southampton 2-1 Leicester City: Three match takeaways
By Chris Hughes
Earlier today Southampton lost in the dying embers courtesy of a fantastic goal from Harry Maguire in added time.
The Saints took the lead for the first time this season when Ryan Bertrand scored after 52 minutes, following an impressive start to the game from the home side.
However Mark Hughes’ side were ahead for just four minutes as Demarai Gray scored a smart near-post finish which saw the game’s momentum flip totally.
The Saints struggled to get a hand on things after the Englishman’s strike, and things went from bad to worse when Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg was sent off with ten minutes to play. However, just when Southampton thought they were leaving with a point, Harry Maguire cut in off the left side before sweetly striking it low past Alex McCarthy from range.
The result leaves the Saints 16th with just a point to their name from three games – with Fulham and Burnley playing each other tomorrow it’s possible Southampton could drop even further down the table by the end of the weekend.
Ultimately it’s early days but supporters are already agitated by the lack of improvement from last system and many of already voiced their concerns at the club’s chances of staying up this season.
Nonetheless, what three takeaways can be drawn from another confidence-denting defeat?
